Post subject:  ** CONTEST ** What It Is???

No prize this time other than the satisfaction of being the first kid on your block (forum) to correctly guess the answer to the following question:

What is the thing in the picture and what, prey tell, is it likely used for in a busy Lutherie repair shop? :)

The lower bout of a cheap classical converted to a sanding block, but what would you be sanding to that radius?

Do you sand the inside of bent sides with it?

No not a hat although it could be.

Same for the door stop, not what we use it for but it also could be used as a door stop.

And not a demonstrator like the ones I see from Breedlove in the moldy humidifier room at a GC but it also could be used for that but this is not what we use it for.

Steve is close..... all I'm going to say. Examine my original question and it will likely lead you to the answer as to what we use these for, we have more than one.

Great tries though guys - keep em coming!

UPDATE: Trev just posted, no not for sanding bent sides.

YES!!!! Good going Steve!!!!!

Somewhere on this lower bout curve is a perfect match for Fender nuts that have a radius on the bottom.

Congrats Steve!!!

It's s piece of leather. I have lots of these of different sizes around my shop and use them for all sorts of things like;

Protecting the shoulders of the head stock when I drop the E strings off the edge under tension to file the nut slots

Protecting the finish below the bridge when changing strings on pinless bridges or electrics with Schaller type hard tails.

As a cushion when prying out particularly difficult bridge pins (like the ones the customer glued in because they were loose)

A cushion when pulling control knobs

A strop for keeping my edges keen

and lots of other stuff I can't think of at the moment......

I usually just rough them out and stick a piece of 150 grit paper to the FB just between the slot and 1st fret to finish them off. The radius at the bottom of the slot is typically the same as the FB radius.

Brian wins - it's a well known old-school method for pulling control knobs on guitars. Insert the slit part under the knob, grab both ends, gently rock, and the knobs off!

Good Going Brian!!!

Lately we have been using these and they work great, very nice idea!
